The Innocence of Children
Hello There!
My sons and I were watching an old episode of The Amazing Race (if you have never watched this show we highly recommend it) the other day.
One of the teams on this particular season was of two men that were married to each other. When they said they were married my older son seemed to be thinking about what he heard for a moment and then asked the question I knew was coming.
“Wait, boys can marry boys?” To which I replied, “Yes, people can marry whoever they want to.”
Then the most amazing thing happened… he said, “oh, ok”.
That was it.
There were no opinions, no discussions about right and wrong, no stereotypes. There was only “oh, ok”. Total acceptance.
I understand, and it breaks my heart, that as he gets older he will be introduced to countless prejudices and stereotypes, but the acceptance and innocence he (and many other children) has right now is something we can all learn from.
Can you imagine if everyone in the world thought that way? Who knows what conflicts we could avoid. Who knows how many lives could be saved? How many lives could be improved?
It is a huge responsibility for us as a society to try and help children hold onto that way of thinking. It is a difficult task but something we should all be striving for and it has to begin at a young age before they can be exposed to all of the negative thoughts floating out in the world.
But if we could succeed, the rewards would be endless.
